In Koyambedu, prices of vegetables have dropped down now

The prices of vegetables have dropped by 10 percent and this was according to the traders belonging to Koyambedu wholesale market. It must be noted that the prices of meat shot up on Monday.

The traders were of the opinion that the transportation played a major role in the availability of produce plus in the determination f the rates.

It is important to mention that the retail market at T. Nagar near the Mambalam railway station has been shifted to a playground in front of Dr. Natesan Park. Information is as many as 25 make shift shops were set up here. The consumers were happy that they were able to purchase vegetables at low cost at this time. This makeshift market would operate from 6 am to 2 pm till the lockdown gets lifted.

It was later mentioned by a vegetable seller that the prices of vegetables were same as in the market. She spoke about how she spends Rs 200 to Rs 300 every day for transporting the vegetables from Koyambedu wholesale market. She expressed her unhappiness regarding the lack of toilet facilities at the makeshift market. The Koyambedu market received just 200 to 230 truckloads of vegetables that the usual 450 truckloads.

It was later explained by Mr. Chandran, president, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Association that the traders brought less number of trucks as there were not many takers. The restriction in the movement of vehicles resulted in just 20 to 30 percent of retail traders from places like Kancheepuram, Arani and Arakkonam visiting the market.
