In view of increasing Coronavirus positive cases in the state of Tamil Nadu, the lockdown has been extended till 31st July 2020. This was announced on Monday by the government of Tamil Nadu.

The chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami issued a statement and according to the statement the complete lockdown imposed in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur from 19th June and in Madurai from 24th June onwards would be extended till 5th July 2020. On all Sundays across TN, there would be a complete shutdown without any relaxation.

From 6TH July, there would be easing of norms. The relaxations previously available for Chennai and Madurai, including extended business hours for outlets selling essentials would come into force and be in place till 31st July.

It is known that the expert medical committee was of the opinion that lockdown after 30th June would not provide a solution in containing the spread of Coronavirus infection. They were against extending the lockdown after 30th June. The decision of the TN government to extend the lockdown after 30th June comes despite the opinion of an expert medical committee.

It was pointed out by deputy director, NIE, Dr Prabhdeep Kaur in the panel’s review meeting with the CM of TN that the expert committee did not recommend lockdown as it was not the only way to control the spread of Coronavirus infection. She then explained about how the panel also took into consideration socio-economic issues of the lockdown while making its recommendations.

Tightening of restrictions in the areas where the infection was high was suggested by the panel. Important information collected is only on 4 Sundays in July month complete lockdown would be there in TN and just health care services like pharmacies and hospitals would be functioning. There would not be any intra-district private and public transport services between 1st July and 15th July 2020.
