The sub-registrar offices outside Chennai and neighbouring districts witnessed many availing tokens for registrations but not turning up for registrations.

Point is tokens that are issued by the registration department for registrations of the properties could be used as e-passes to travel between the districts. It is now brought out that these tokens are being misused as e-passes by many for travelling to their native places.

It is worth mentioning that for getting tokens basic property details like location, survey numbers and sub-register under whose purview it is have to be keyed in on the website. In a few minutes, a token is generated. Fact is while e-pass applications could be rejected the tokens are issued in all cases. Before COVID outbreak, 10% of those availing tokens did not turn up for their registrations. In the sub-registrar offices in districts south of Villupuram, 20% to 35% no shows were witnessed.

In the year 2018, the entire property registration process was made online is well known. Information is registration department started giving online tokens specifying date and time for registration of property at respective sub-registrar offices.

It was announced by the TN government that these tokens could be used as an alternative for e-pass for registrations that needed travelling to other districts for registrations of lands in the lockdown time. Now, many are using these tokens to move to their native places. The sources belonging to the registration department mentioned that number of no-shows for the registration of property surprised many. Just 30 persons turned up for registrations in the sub-registrar offices that issued 50 tokens.
