In the future, don’t be surprised if you come across a remote monitoring system in the pillar boxes of the street lights in Chennai. Information is Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC would be installing a remote monitoring system in the pillar boxes to monitor the street lights. By this, all the street lights would be monitored from the headquarters of the Chennai Corporation.

It is now said that the Chennai residents do not have to ring the corporation helpline number to complain about the street lights.

The main benefit of a remote monitoring system is it would sort out power fluctuations on its own and alert the local engineer and corporation control room when the lights go off.

Chennai city has got as many as 2.8lakhs street lights and as many as 7707 pillar boxes. It must be noted that around 60 street lights are fixed to a box. Information collected is each box would get a controller having a panel to monitor street lights. Power usage would be shown by a meter in the panel and fluctuations in the power would be handled by the miniature circuit breaker.

Communication with the dashboard present in the HQ would be possible by means of a SIM card present in the panel. It is important to note that at present pillar boxes have got timers and the lights turn on and off as per the preset time. Many timers have stopped functioning due to the frequent usage and as a result the Chennai corporation staff have to switch on and put off the lights.
