Towards the end of the month of March, lockdown was announced in Chennai and TN to control the spread of Covid-19 infection. Now the new is the collection of toll at the plazas at MR or Rajiv Gandhi Salai and ECR or East Coast Road would resume.

Tamil Nadu Road Development Company or TNRDC is responsible for the management of the roads. Some sources belonging to this company pointed out that staff were unable to come to work due to the restrictions.  An official later explained that due to some relaxations now the staff were able to come to the work and for ensuring safety enough precautions would be taken.

There is gradual increase in the vehicular traffic in OMR and it has been witnessing 35% of its normal per day numbers. In ECR, there has been more traffic on the weekends. The trials have been conducted and it is now said that the electronic toll collection method FASTag would be starting its operations at the toll plazas.

It was brought to light by the official that there would be reduction in the cash transactions. He added that those using local resident passes have to get ID tags and this would enable them to move without the need to swipe their passes at the booths present at the toll plazas. It is known that due to non collection of toll there were losses and TNRDC would write to TN government for seeking compensation by the way of money or by concession time extension.
