In the future, the deaths occurring due to the delay of the ambulances would not be there in the Chennai city.

The number of ambulances would be increased by 40 and response time would be reduced to less than 5 minutes. Point is that GCC has decided to strengthen its patient transport system.

There are presently 80 ambulances in the Chennai city and with 40 more ambulances the total would go to 120 ambulances in Chennai. This would be done in another 3 or 4 days. This was according to a GCC official.

The delay in taking the patients having severe respiratory illness or breathlessness to the hospitals has resulted in the deaths of these patients. The shocking information is nearly 500 patients have passed away due to the delay from ambulances. The Coronavirus infection has led to the deaths of as many as 2032 persons in Chennai city alone.

On Monday, 27th July 2020, Mr. G. Prakash, Chennai Corporation commissioner took part in a meeting with the representatives from other agencies like TN Health System Project. Need for a proper transportation system was stressed.

Truth is the GCC officials have advised those persons in-charge of ambulances to take strict action against the drivers who delayed transporting patients to the hospitals.

For transporting patients having breathing difficulties, the Chennai residents have been asked to call the Corporation volunteers, sanitary inspectors or zonal assistant health officers etc. Information is coordinating with the ambulance workers and arranging transport would be done by the GCC volunteers and the ward level officials.

Important point is the Chennai residents could dial 108 for transportation of patients to the hospitals. For reporting any delay during the pandemic, the residents have been asked to call Ripon Buildings control room number 044 46122300. In the past, the number of ambulances with an oxygen support system was just 40 and now it has been increased to 70.
