Weather observation network in the city of Chennai would be further expanded now!!

The news is that the meteorological department has identified 4 places in Chennai to set up more automatic rain gauges or ARG. The 4 places identified are Sairam Engineering College in Tambaram, Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University in Guindy, Young Men’s Christian Association in Nandanam and a school in Villivakkam.

Information collected is that the project to install ARGs in these 4 locations was under process and more sites would be identified for the sake of developing denser networks. It is now said that accurate flood predictions in Chennai city would be possible with many ARG’s. The ARG’s would help in monitoring the temperature levels as well as the rainfall patterns. In TN, at present there are as many as 40 automatic weather stations and 73 ARG’s.

In recent times, the meteorological department made many heads turn after it installed high speed wind recorders in 4 different places in TN. Many cyclone prone areas in TN would be benefitted by these recorders as these weather instruments with sensors could record wind speed and pressure. This would help sectors like fisheries etc. It must be noted that the instruments were set up in places like Cuddalore, Adirampattinam, Kanniyakumari and Pamban.
