The Chennai residents would be delighted to know about this!!
On Tuesday, 8th December, MTC operated about 2500 buses in Chennai city for the public by following standard operating procedures. The MTC has got permission from the TN government to operate buses with 100percent occupancy now is well known.
The government has relaxed the norm of 60% occupancy in the buses and due to this there were more passengers in the buses. It was revealed by an official release from the MTC that the passengers were allowed to travel only if they wore face masks as per the standard operating procedure. There were many complaints from the commuters that the buses were full with full seating capacity and many passengers travelled by standing. After its impractical restriction on occupancy, the TN Government has revised the SOP.
It must be taken into account that the TN government’s restriction of 60percent occupancy was not followed by the transport corporation buses. It was pointed out that all the buses operating in the Ambattur- Avadi stretches were full of passengers and many stood in the footboards too.
There were some suggestions from the passengers about increasing the MTC services to the pre-Covid times. To reduce the overcrowding in the MTC buses, the government must also run more suburban trains in Chennai. It was brought out that the public transport must be restored fully for the sake of the public as the normalcy was back again in the Chennai city.
An official then spoke about how MTC has been operating 2500 buses every day even though the patronage has come down. It is important to note that MTC has been incurring losses due to less patronage. The official added that if the local train services resumed then overcrowding in the MTC buses in certain stretches would not be there.
