Till now, parents or guardians would have provided details about their religion, caste and community while admitting their kids in the schools in Tamil Nadu. This would not be there hereafter. Recently, a court order was issued to the school education department in this regard and it is not mandatory anymore to feed this data in the student database.

It is well known that till now in the EMIS or Education Management Information System the school managements including self financing institutions had to update religion, caste and community of the students.

The TN state government has already issued orders to the Directorate of School Education authorities that those who don`t wish to mention their religion or their caste in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate or SSLC and Transfer Certificate or TC were permitted to mention ‘No religion’ and ‘No caste’ against those columns in the applications or leave them as blank. This was brought out by a senior officer belonging to the School Education Department. He then threw light on how this has not been followed and many schools insisted the parents to mention their religion and caste in various application forms during admissions.

It must be noted that even in EMIS the mandatory conditions of filing religion, caste and community of the student were not removed as per GO or Government Order. It is learnt that the GO has been issued to all education authorities in each district in TN to instruct all the schools to follow the court order from this academic year. Information is that if then parents wanted to mention their religion or caste details in the forms they would be allowed to do that. The senior official later highlighted that if the parents who were eligible to claim the concessions/scholarships based on their community would have to mention the details.
