The news is that prices of vegetables like onions, brinjals and ladyfingers have fallen down at the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex or KWMC. Point is that the retail rates of these veggies have remained 20 to 25% more than in the wholesale market. Despite the fall in the prices, the rates of few vegetables such as drumsticks have remained high.

In the wholesale market, one drumstick was sold at Rs 2 but at the Adyar and in the Royapettah markets the price of drumstick was Rs 16 and Rs 10 respectively. It must be noted that the veggies like potatoes and tomatoes etc were sold at double the rates of the wholesale market at Rs 30 and Rs 44 per kg respectively in the retail shops.

The wholesale rates of most vegetables have decreased now. This was mentioned by Mr. V.R. Soundararajan a former member of the market management committee of KWMC. Fact is that the biggest drop was the prices of onions that were sold for Rs 20 per kg at the market. From Rs 40, the cost of ladyfingers has decreased to Rs 15 now. Every day, this KYMC receives 150tonnes of drumstick and 30 to 40 trucks of onion. He concluded that the market might receive additional 20 to 30 trucks of vegetables.
