It has been confirmed by the TNPCB or Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board that the air pollution has gone up in Chennai city in the last 3 days. The reason cited was due to the presence of dry winds.
It was mentioned by an officer belonging to TNPCB that due to dry winds there was smog for the last 3 days in Chennai. This has increased the air pollution in Chennai. He added that after February the air pollution would go down. It must be noted that the lifting of total lockdown on Sundays has led to more vehicle movement now leading to increased air pollution.
Some environmental activists were of the view that the TNPCB has not been taking steps to reduce air pollution in Chennai. On Monday, 31st January 2022, Chennai city recorded 100 microgram per cubic metre pollution levels.
The CPCB or Central Pollution Control Board data has confirmed that on Monday many places in Chennai had high pollution levels. Arumbakkam recorded 143 micrograms per cubic metre, Manali recorded 124micrograms per cubic metre.
Other localities like Perungudi, Royapuram and Kodungaiyur recorded 121 micrograms per cubic metre, 95 microgram per cubic metre and 117 microgram per cubic metres respectively. The permissible levels are only 60 microgram per cubic metre in the localities.
It was later mentioned by Shwetha Narayan, an environmental activist that if it was a seasonal variation then TNPCB should have associated with the MET department and issued an alert. Point is that senior citizens and pregnant women are vulnerable to poor air quality or air pollution.
