Supermarkets in Chennai selling milk at huge discounts have been creating problems for many milk retailers as well as dealers now. These retailers and dealers have asked the state government to take action to prevent sale of milk below MRP rates by some supermarkets. While the MRP is Rs 20, some supermarkets now sell half litre milk packets for less than Rs 12

According to Mr. S.A. Ponnuswamy, TN Milk Dealers and Employees Welfare Association it was clear that many consumers have picked up fights with retailers and distributors of milk. He threw light on the fact that in some places the shopkeepers buy milk from supermarkets at low prices and sell the milk to the consumers. There are many milk stocks that have not been sold now and this was pointed out by another milk dealer. This was due to the retailers picking milk from the supermarkets.

He then explained how milk was purchased by the consumers these days by checking the use-by-date and they don’t accept old milk. Milk from the private dairies were sold by them since these dairies provide atleast a day’s use-by date.

Local supermarkets selling milk at cheap rates have been appreciated by some residents now. A resident from Choolaimedu spoke about how extra milk was used to make paneer in his home.

According to Mr. Sadagopan, a consumer activist, when supermarkets sell milk at low rates then immediately questions about the milk quality arise. He explained how there was no rule that would refer to it as unfair trade practice.

The fact is that supermarkets selling milk at low rates have hurt many sellers. It must be taken into account that a product from a company should not be sold at different rates in different places. He concluded that the Consumer Protection Act must be modified and include this also as an offence.
