Asian Development Bank or ADB has provided an additional 6.8million USD for GCC to construct a bird island and 2 hectares of forest at Kadapakkam Lake at Manali in the coming 3 to 4 years. It is now said that Chennai could become the model for nature based urban flood risk management in the entire India. Established in the year 1966, ADB is a regional development bank.

Information gathered is that on 16th of August 2022 an additional fund for the Integrated Urban Flood Management for Chennai- Kosasthalaiyar Basin project was sanctioned. This fund amount would be utilised by TN for 4 purposes. It must be noted that the first purpose would be to desilt the lake for restoring its original water holding capacity. To increase the capacity of the lake from 1.1 million cubic metres to 2.2 million cubic metres, the lake would be deepened by 2m. In addition to this, a 20m wide bund would be constructed with a cycle track plus a walking path.

It is surprising to mention here that the fund money would also be used to build Bird Island with approximately 2hectare forest. Recreational facilities would be set up at the Kadapakkam Lake in Manali . In the future, elder persons, women, kids and those with physical issues would be able to enjoy more.

Using nature based solutions the funds would be used to raise awareness on the water body rejuvenation. Through the development of investment readiness roadmap, there is focus on replicating such solutions in other cities belonging to TN also.

The Chennai city`s natural landscape has been encroached by Chennai`s rapid urbanisation. This has reduced the water retention capacity and due to this Chennai is vulnerable to flooding during the rainy season. For constructing new SWDs for a distance of 588kms, ADB has initially provided a loan of 251million USD. This amount would also be used for replacing 175kms of SWD and to improve 11km stretches in places like Ambattur, Ariyalur, Kadapakkam & Korattur channels. The main purpose would be to enhance the water carrying capacity and upgrade storm water pumping stations and to build a new one.
