In the future, assessing various modes of transport such as metro trains, buses etc would be very easy for the Chennai residents. The Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC is having plans to create a multi-modal transport at Guindy and Washermanpet in Chennai.
It must be recalled that GCC and CMRL has already proposed a multi-modal transport at Broadway to link Broadway bus stand, metro station, Fort railway station, Ripon Buildings and High Court etc.
Under the Mega Street project, multi-modal transport would be implemented and this was mentioned by an officer belonging to GCC. It is known that the Mega Street project was proposed to redevelop the roads in Chennai city to promote non-motorised transport.
Selected roads in places like Guindy and Washermenpet were inspected by some officials belonging to GCC and CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority on Friday. The aim behind this inspection was to discuss the feasibility of implementing a multi-modal transportation hub in these places. Project would be implemented based on the reports.
According to an official belonging to GCC, in Guindy the roads behind the Guindy railway station would be taken up under the project. In the same manner roads around Washermenpet metro station and Washermenpet railway station would also be taken up.
To link various modes of transport together in these 2 important places in Chennai, escalators, pedestrian pathways, skywalks and other facilities etc would be provided. It is learnt that this multi-modal project in these 2 places would be implemented jointly by GCC, CMRL, state Highways department and the Southern Railways. The passengers would be able to reach one transport station to another very easily once the multi-modal project gets completed.
It must be noted that recently GCC has requested CMRL to take up Broadway multi-modal transportation project as CMRL has already implemented a project by connecting Central railway station and Central metro station.
There would be an increase in the usage of public transportation facilities and reduction in the usage of private vehicles when multi-modal transportation hubs come into existence. This was according to another official from GCC. He added that the emission of pollution gases would be eliminated.
