Adjacent to the Kilambakkam bus terminus in Chennai on the GST Road, a landmark thematic park would be coming up soon.

Information collected is that CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has proposed to develop Kilambakkam Biodiversity and Archaeological Interpretation Park. This would be as a part of mitigating the disruption caused to the nearby sensitive ecological zone. This park would be set up on 16.9 acres of land because the bus terminus is coming up along the protected zone of ASI and a hydrologically important floodplain.

Under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 2010, more than 46 acres of land in Kilambakkam has been notified as a protected site by the Archaeological Survey of India or ASL. This was pointed out by Mr. Anshul Mishra, CMDA member secretary. The bio-diversity park would be built in the green belt zone to showcase the excavations of ASI and that would be due to the fact that the bus terminus at Kilambakkam would be coming up close to the perimeter of the protected zone.

The public would be provided with recreational facilities plus community activities etc and this would be the objective behind setting up the bio-diversity park. Due to the close proximity with the Vandalur Zoo, an ecological corridor would be created by this upcoming park.

It must be taken into account that CMDA, while getting environmental clearance from SEIAA for the construction of the bus terminus, mandated a list of measures to protect and improve the surrounding environment in the locality with efficient water and waste management, clean energy and native biodiversity enhancement.

It was later revealed by the superintendent engineer of CMDA Mr. N. Srinivasa Rao that the bio-diversity park was discussed at the stakeholders meeting organised by Mr. Anshul Mishra with the representatives from ASL. The proposal to set up the park was appreciated and DPR was finalised based on the meeting.

He later brought to light that the project report was prepared after studying the topography, surface drainage, climate and soil of the area etc. The proposal has been sent to ASL in Chennai by the CMDA forgetting no objection certificate.
