Chennai and the state of Tamil Nadu must feel happy and proud now!!
Vandalur Zoo also known as Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai is now adjudged as the second best zoo in the entire India. The West Bengal based PNHZP or Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling is ranked number one in India.
It must be noted that there are around 150 zoos in India and Vandalur Zoo in Chennai now getting second best rank is sensational. On 10th of September a zoo director`s conference took place in Bhubaneshwar and the Central Zoo Authority released the ranking list. Mysore based Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens is ranked third in the list and is followed by Kolkata based Alipore Zoological Garden.
It is superb to mention that in PNHZP the Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Snow Leopard etc have been attracting the attention of many visitors.
All the zoos across the country have been evaluated based on certain important parameters like management and effectiveness. Later on, marks were issued for the zoos by the Central Zoo Authority.
It was mentioned by the zoo director that Darjeeling zoo was given the highest percentage of 83. It was in the year 1958 Darjeeling zoo was established in Birch Hill under the Department of Education. Located at a height of 7000 feet or 2134m, this zoo is India`s largest high altitude zoo.
Information gathered is that this Darjeeling zoo is internationally recognised for breeding and conservation programmes of endangered animal species of eastern Himalayas.
