To convert the highly popular Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex or KWMC in Koyambedu in Chennai into a carbon neutral facility ( the market would be powered only by the solar energy), the State Environment Forest and Climate Change department has joined hands with the IIT-Madras to study methodology.
This market in Chennai is regarded as one of the biggest markets in Asia is known to us. To make this market 100% carbon as well as plastic free, a meeting was held between the department, GCC and CMDA recently.
The secretary of the department of environment and forests, Supriya sahu mentioned that IIT-M has been carrying out studies to implement several initiatives. She added that one such initiative was to power the KWMC with solar energy.
It is learnt that the amount of electricity needed to run KWMC would be studied plus measures would be taken to cut down energy consumption and produce solar power. Study would be conducted to know about the possibilities of generating power from vegetables and fruit wastes etc. Out of the 200 tonnes of vegetable waste that is produced by this market, the majority of the waste comes from banana stems.
There are plans to set up a bio-methanation plant to generate biogas and electricity would be produced from that. Currently, most of the vegetable waste is being sent away for disposal by the GCC is known. It is now revealed that the study would also focus on methods to reduce water usage in addition to cutting electricity usage and increasing green energy. The present water needs would be analysed by IIT-M and an action plan would be proposed to reduce and reuse water.
To recycle sewage generated at the market complex, environment dept and CMDA would construct a water treatment plan. Steps would be taken to cut the emission from the vehicles that come to the market.
Important info about the Koyambedu market:
It must be noted that this Koyambedu market complex has 3900 shops selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, grains, perishable goods etc. Many customers and retailers come to the market everyday. Two vending machines to sell cloth bags have been installed in this market by GCC and the department.
