It was 7 years back the first metro train operated in Chennai and many people who wanted to get the feel of the metro train took joy rides. These days, metro trains have become part and parcel of many students, office goers etc and for those frequenting transport hubs like CMBT, railway station or airport etc.
It was brought out by some officers belonging to CMRL that in the month of September alone 38.23 lakhs passengers used metro trains in Chennai to go to their destinations. The use of travel cards to travel in the metro trains in Chennai has been growing.
It is known that the commuters have got 3 options to travel in the metro trains like QR Code, travel cards and tokens. As per the data from CMRL for the month of September 2022 it was clear that 4.9lakh passengers brought tokens and 17.19 lakh opted for QR Code system. Truth is that nearly 62% of those traveling by metro trains were regular users.
The sale of travel cards has grown immensely now due to factors like Coronavirus pandemic, marketing and promotion strategies etc. This was according to an officer from CMRL.
He threw light on how during the pandemic CMRL stopped issuing tokens and many travelled using travel cards. It is learnt that after the resumption of tokens many commuters shifted to the travel card system and didn`t buy tokens. The CMRL has also played its role well in making the travel card to become popular by announcing prizes for maximum number of rides and recharging the travel card for a certain amount etc. The officer later explained that these steps carried out by CMRL have made a huge difference and currently on the weekdays 2.15lakhs to 2020 lakhs passengers per day travel by metro trains and majority of them use travel cards only.
