If you go around Chennai, then you would come across underground electricity cables that have been dug out and abandoned at several places!!
Truth is that pedestrians and motorists who use these roads would be electrocuted especially during the rains. The GCC has been racing against time to complete SWD works now in Chennai. In this scenario, the dugout electricity wires have been creating huge fear for the residents.
In important localities like T. Nagar, Mylapore, Teynampet, Alwarpet and Kodambakkam etc, GCChas taken up SWD construction works on a massive scale now. This is being done as a part of flood mitigation work. Nearly 2500 missing links have been identified by GCC now in the network of SWD in places like Teynampet zone, Kodambakkam zone and in Perungudi zone etc.
Many sewer lines were damaged and underground power cables were punctured while doing the work and after completing the work the electricity cables were not relaid underground. They were left in the open.
It was confirmed by the resident activist Mr. VS. Jayaraman that on busy streets like G.N. Chetty Road, Thirumalai Pillai Road, Habibullah Road, Ramanathan Street and Rameswaram Road were dug up and power cables were taken out. On Arcot Road, Kodambakkam Main Road, Tara Chand Nagar, PT. Rajan Salai etc in the Kodambakkam zone also the situation has been the same. The power cables were taken out in many streets belonging to the Adyar zone too.
In the two important stretches of Pulianthope High Road and Nungambakkam High Road the underground power cables have been bunched together.
