One of the most important railway stations and second largest railway terminal in the city of Chennai is Egmore railway station.
Under the Gati Shakthi scheme, redevelopment of this railway station would start soon. The southern railways or SR has identified DEC Infrastructure and Projects as contractor for the redevelopment work at this railway station. It is now mentioned that the Egmore railway station would be upgraded to international levels.
According to a senior officer belonging to the Chennai division of SR it was clear that PM Gati Shakthi - National Master Plan for Multi modal Connectivity has got a major objective of upgrading several railway stations to world class standards. Truth is that Egmore railway station would be redeveloped at a cost of R s734 crores in another 3 years. Initial survey work has been started by the Hyderabad based DEC Infrastructure and Projects.
After getting clearance from the State Heritage Company, preservation of the heritage structures at Egmore railway station and designing of new buildings etc would be done.
Benefits of redevelopment:
It is learnt that redevelopment would create passenger amenities that are not available at the station at present. There would also be segregated departure and arrival terminals and concourses.
The superb piece of information is that Egmore railway station would have lounges, food courts, parcel and post office services etc. In addition, there would also be 2 multi level car parking lots and 2 huge station buildings. Resurfacing and renovation would be done in the platforms with the help of electromechanical devices.
For interior and exterior refurbishment and renovation using electromechanical devices, the heritage station building present on the east side would be taken up. The reason for that would be mainly due to the fact that Egmore is one of the oldest railway stations in India.
It is noteworthy that DEC Infra and Projects has got diverse portfolio and it has done projects of more than Rs 4000 crores for private companies as well as for the government companies etc. It was later pointed out by a source from the company that it wants the Egmore railway station to be a model railway station.
