The deepavali festival is over and many persons who have gone to their hometowns or natives are coming back to Chennai city. This has led to unimaginable traffic congestion on the highways.
From 21st of October onwards, special buses operated to carry the people from Chennai to various districts in Tamil Nadu. Many people living in several places in Chennai started to travel to their native places in the state. Not only people used special buses but also trains, omni buses and even their own vehicles etc to go to their native places.
From 6 major locations in Chennai, the govt operated buses for the people going to their native places in TN. It is noteworthy that 5635421 persons travelled from Chennai in as many as 10325 buses on 21st, 22nd and on 23rd October. On the day of deepavali that is from 24th October itself special buses have been operating to bring back the people to Chennai from their native places in the state.
On Deepavali day, just 700 buses were operated along with the regular buses as only few people would come to Chennai. On 25th October, 1678 buses from several districts were operated to Chennai city and 2080 buses to other places except Chennai. These buses helped many to travel and reach several places easily. At many toll gates and bypasses in Chennai from that day itself there has been heavy traffic congestion.
Yesterday morning, there was heavy traffic congestion witnessed in the suburbs of Chennai in places like Perungalathur, Tambaram, Vandalur, Ponneri etc and this was due to people returning back to Chennai from their hometowns. For regulating the traffic in several places in Chennai, about 300 traffic policemen were involved. The railway stations at Tambaram, Central and Egmore witnessed heavy traffic congestion as many returned back to Chennai.
