Robots for cleaning SWDS in Chennai?

The Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi has stated that GCC would explore the possibility of making use of robots to clean the storm water drains or SWDs in Chennai.

He threw light about the Chennai Corporation increasing the number of manholes in the new SWDs in the city. He added that earlier the distance between 2 manholes was 10m and now it has been reduced to 5m. Fact is that the new drains at Kosasthalaiyar river basin would have more manholes.

After making sure that sewage would not be let into the drains, the Chennai Corporation must ask the labourers to enter into the manholes for desilting works. This was according to some councillors. It was later mentioned by some councillors that the work of desilting was totally different from manual scavenging. As per the directions of the HC, GCC must clean the drains in all the areas.

It is learnt that the super sucker lorry used by GCC was able to clear only  a small distance of 20m to 30m per day. Chennai has got 2200km of SWD and better technology would be required to clean the drains. In 2022, 1203 km of drains have been cleaned by the Chennai Corporation.
