The construction of a new tuna fishing harbour has been going on now at a brisk pace at Thiruvottiyur in north Chennai. An amount of Rs 200 crores would be spent on this.

It is well known that many fishermen from localities like Thiruvottriyur, Ennore and Kasimedu etc venture into the sea to catch fish with the help of paddle boats, piper boats and wooden boats etc. The fishes are sold locally as well as exported to foreign countries

At the Kasimedu fishing harbour every day more than 2000 boats go onto the sea to catch fish. There are lots of boats here and this has led to space crunch issues here. To reduce the congestion at Kasimedu fishing harbour a decision was taken by the govt to catch deep sea fishes like tuna and shrimp etc also. For these purposes, TN govt has decided to set up a new fishing harbour in north Chennai.

It must be recalled that in 2019 the work to construct a new fishing harbour near Pattinathar Koil in Thiruvottiyur began at a cost of Rs 200 crores. In this new fishing harbour, there would be enough space for large as well as small boats, a hall for netting, small fishes auction hall, a deep sea fish auction hall etc would be available. There would also be enough space available in the new fishing harbour to park 500 power boats and 300 small boats also.

At this new fishing harbour, there would also be an office, hostel, canteen, selling place for fish, place for boat repairs, fish processing halls etc are being constructed. The construction of the entrance at this new fishing harbour has been going well. This new fishing harbour would be made available for the public by March 2023. This was according to the Fisheries department.
