By constructing a rotary bridge across the Buckingham canal, East Coast Road or ECR would be linked with Old Mahabalipuram Road or OMR in Chennai. For this an in-principle approval has been issued by the state housing and urban development to Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority or CMDA.

In the month of October 2022, a meeting took place under the chairmanship of Secretary of Highways and Minor Ports department. In the meeting, discussions took place to link ECR with OMR. This was according to a GO.

It is learnt that the consultant suggested roads on the bunds of Bickingham canal and a rotary bridge in the middle but WRD pointed out the permissibility of roads on the bunds.

The canal would actually get protection by providing roads along the bunds and this was mentioned by the principle secretary to the government, Highways and Minor Ports. He added that it might be considered as an infrastructure and not as a prohibited development on the canal bunds.

It would be possible to construct roads along the bunds and this was as per WRD. For connecting all existing roads present on the both sides of the canal, a decision would be taken. In addition, the decision regarding  providing 2 lane links with rotary intersections in two or three new locations would also be taken.

To implement the decisions that have been taken in the meeting, the GO directed CMDA to conduct necessary studies. In the state budget session, an announcement was made to link ECR and OMR is known.

To specify the delineated areas of Thirumazhisai and Chengalpet new towns, 2 GO`s have been issued by the housing dept. Information is that Thirumazhidai town would have 17 villages and Chengalpet town would have 60 villages. It is now said that the residents could send their suggestions/objections to the housing and urban development dept within 2 months.
