Sensational Sponge Parks to be set up in Chennai soon!!

In the future, don`t be surprised if you see mini ponds and trenches in the parks in Chennai!!
To provide a superb solution for the issue of inundation on the roads in Chennai, the GCC would be setting up 47 Sponge Parks. Information is that a work order has been issued to set up 5 parks and soon work orders for 42 parks would be issued. It is now said that mini ponds and trenches would be set up in these 47 parks in the city. The water on the roads would be carried by the trenches and storm water drains into the ponds.
Solutions not only for the floods but also for the droughts is important and this was according to Mr.S. Rajendiran, chief engineer of GCC. He explained that the localities must be self-sufficient to prevent street flooding. By this, ground water would also be recharged.
There would be walls around the ponds and stone pitching along with fencing to provide safety. This was according to an engineer who is in-charge of the work. For removing the excess water, inlets into the ponds from the SWD, roads and sides of the parks plus outlet chambers would also be set up.
He added that other works like RWH structures with well rings inside the ponds to allow groundwater percolation, tree plantation around the ponds, lighting etc would also be carried out.
Some experts have stated that just by adding mini ponds alone the parks cannot be called sponge parks. It is necessary for the engineers to study the entire drainage system of the area.
It was then highlighted by Manushi Jain, director of Sponge Collaborative that there are 3 layers like green, blue and social layer. Truth is that the sponge parks must go beyond flood mitigation and bring in communities etc.
