Recently, the Cyclone Mandous damaged the ramp that was built for the differently able persons at the Marina Beach in Chennai. Now, a removable sea view point would be constructed by the GCC for the differently able persons at the Marina Beach. It is superb to note that this point could be retracted 20m from the sea high tide line.
Mr. S. Rajendiran, chief engineer of GCC explained that the wooden planks that were damaged by the sea were removed and would be kept in a closed truck nearby. He spoke about how wooden planks up to 20m were removed and how a temporary sea view point would be set up in January for the differently abled persons. He concluded that the temporary sea viewpoint would also be removed next year before heavy rains could cause any damage.
To ensure a long life for the ramp, this would be the possible solution now. This was according to GCC. It is noteworthy that the 263m long ramp starts near Vivekananda House and ends on the shore. An amount of Rs 1.15 crores has been spent for this. The wooden ramp is attached to beach muds with the help of bolts. The recent heavy waves due to the Cyclone Mandous had dismantled the base of the sea view point that was 10m from the sea.
As building permanent structure here would be against the coastal zone regulation norms, permanent structure was not constructed. This was according to Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, GCC Commissioner. He was of the view that the temporary set up would work well.
