A third desalination plant is being constructed at Nemmeli in Chennai is known to us. Now, CMWSSB has speeded up the construction works of this plant that would have a capacity to treat 150 MLD per day. Before the end of the current fiscal year, the construction works would get over and this was according to a senior officer. An amount of Rs 1516.8 crores has been spent to construct this desalination plant.

It must be taken into account that the construction of the plant and the main water transmission pipelines from the desal plant to Pallavaram is going on now. Till now, nearly 805 of the work has been completed. This was mentioned by the senior officer.

Residents belonging to southern localities such as Velachery, Alandur, St Thomas Mount, Medavakkam, Kovilambakkam, Nanmangalam, Keelkattalai, Moovarasampettai, Sholinganallur, Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam, Madipakkam and IT Corridor would get benefited from this third desalination plant. Point is that nearly 9lakhs people in these places would be benefited by this upcoming plant at nemmeli.

Is it necessary to have a third desal plant now:

It is worth mentioning here that the Chennai city`s water demand stood at 1400 MLD but the water supply was just 1060 MLD. To bridge this gap it is importN t to identify additional sources that would provide water to the city. This is the reason why third desalination plant is needed. This was brought to light by another officer from CMWSSB

There are non perennial water sources in Chennai city and the present ones are dependent on the monsoons. Chennai city faces drought whenever the monsoon fails. It must  be recalled that the first desal plant was built at Minjur with a capacity of 100 MLD and second plant at Nemmeli of capacity 100 MLD.
