Now CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority has approached the Centre for Development of Advance Computing or C-DAC. The main reason was to provide a common ticketing system for seamless commuting in Chennai.

For the common ticketing system to be successful in Chennai, both MTC buses and metro trains must be increased. This is as per some urban planning experts. For financial and technical quotes, the officers from CUMTA have written to C-DAC. It must be noted that the C-DAC officials also have made a presentation to CUMTA regfarding what they propose.

Point is that a QR code based cashless ticketing system was proposed. It was later pointed out by an officer that the target users were the commuters of metro trains, road transport and suburban trains etc. It is now said that the QR code will have layers for bus, metro trains and for suburban trains. The ticket could be booked through a mobile application and this app would serve as a journey planner.

The application would show options (like metro, bus or suburban trains etc) once the commuter enters the source and destination etc. The various options shown would be based on the journey distance. The superb piece of information is that the users would be able to book tickets for their entire family instead of booking tickets seperately. The officers from CUMTA have now requested for the family tickets and this apart from the individual tickets.

The first effort would be to increase the MTCs bus fleet strength in Chennai wrt the population plus to increase the metro train ridership. According to the intl standards of bus population proportion, Chennai needs atleast 13400 more buses as it is the backbone of Chennai residents. It was mentioned that  the common ticketing system would be fruitful only when synergy among all the transport modes is achieved.
