Here comes a superb piece of news for the Chennaites!!
In the next few weeks, the Chennaites would be able to use the new integrated terminal at the airport that was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi just a couple of days back.
The Immigration and Security Check counters at the airport would be increased from 54 to 108 and from 30 to 80 respectively. By this, long queues of passengers waiting to complete their immigration and security checks would be reduced. The clearing and screening process would be done very fast. Point is that the passengers could watch them through LED displays from their waiting area itself. Once clearing of baggage gets over, they would be sent directly to the flights. All the prohibited items would be identified easily as the system would give accurate results. This was as per some officers at the airport.
In September 2018, the construction work at Chennai airport started in 2.36lakhs sqm at a cost of Rs 2400 cr. The work was completed in 2 phases. It must be noted that in phase the integrated terminal was built on 1.26 lakhs sqm at an estimate of Rs 1260cr. There is also wide space available for the passengers to sit comfortably. Within the next few weeks, the newly built terminal would be opened for the public. Then only, the arrival point at the international terminal would be demolished. It is now said that the construction of the second phase would be completed in the next 2 years.
