The Chennai Railway Division has reversed its decision to suspend the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) service between Chennai Beach and Chepauk for a seven-month period to facilitate the execution of the Egmore and Beach 4th line work. In a circular issued on Tuesday, the Chief Traffic Planning Manager of Southern Railway announced the withdrawal of the earlier proposal.
The decision to withdraw the suspension of MRTS services came in response to reservations expressed by the division regarding the extended period of service interruption. The Chief Traffic Planning Manager has instructed officials to submit a fresh proposal that addresses all the requirements of the Chennai Division.
An anonymous senior officer from Southern Railway acknowledged that carrying out the 4th line work without impacting the MRTS service between Beach and Chepauk / Chintadaripet would be highly challenging. Discussions have taken place with state government officials, and a decision will be made shortly, considering some modifications to the initial announcement.
The railway department is now contemplating a staggered suspension of MRTS services for the 4th line work to minimize disruptions to the public. By adopting this approach, the aim is to ensure that the service provided to the people remains largely uninterrupted.
Further updates on the revised plan for the MRTS service suspension and the execution of the Egmore and Beach 4th line work will be announced in due course.
