After a survey conducted in Chennai and its suburbs, a report on the presence of poor road conditions was released by the Arappor Iyakkam on Tuesday, 10th October 2023. This has caught the attention of many now. Now, GCC has been speeding up the road re-laying works in the Chennai city and the report from Arappor Iyakkam has come at this point of time.

It was brought to light by the study that as many as 324 roads in Chennai and its suburban places required immediate re-laying before the onset of NE monsoons. The newly laid roads sustain atleast for 8 years and good quality of materials must be used for road re-laying works. This must be ensured by the authorities belonging to GCC.

The shocking piece of information is that in the Chennai Corporation limit atleast 192 roads were of poor quality and complaints were received regarding this. Fact is that more than half of 192 roads were present in the Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones etc.

One hundred and thirty two roads out of a total of 192 roads were in extremely poor conditions and needed to be re-laid as soon as possible. Atleast patch work on the roads must be carried out in those roads where it was not feasible to re-lay before the onset of NE monsoon.

In the zones like Thiruvottriyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet and Royapuram etc, out of a total of 32 roads as many as 18 roads need re-laying works, 14 roads require patch works etc to be done immediately.

According to Mr. Jayaram Venkatesan from Arappor Iyakkam, the local body failed to carry out the patch work properly. He added that the residents were unhappy as no SWD has been constructed to avoid rain water stagnation in the area in the monsoon season.

The survey also revealed that there was no proper milling of the roads and road height was increased than usual. Mr. Jayaram Venkatesan concluded that the co-ordination between various departments like CMW, GCC and Tangedco etc must be improved. By proper coordination, damaging the roads after re-laying would be prevented.
