In the future, don`t get surprised if you come across GCTP widening the road space and clearing encroachments present on the platforms etc!!

The news is that GTCP or Greater Chennai Traffic Police have launched a special drive now to widen the motorable road space. It is worthy to mention here that GTCP has adopted zero tolerance to parking stretches. In these stretches, no parking rule would be strictly followed. Point is that those vehicles found abandoned or parked would be penalised, charged for obstruction and seized immediately. This was according to the ACP (GCTP) Mr. R. Sudhakar.

The main aim of this initiative is to bring pavements back into life and to ensure the safety of the pedestrians in Chennai.

Out of a total of 330 road accident fatalities in the city in 2023, 188 pedestrians have lost their lives due to two wheeler crashes and 36 pedestrian deaths took place due to car crashes. It was found out that the pedestrians were forced to walk on the main carriageway amidst fast moving vehicles. The reason was either due to absence of pavement or due to encroachment by vehicles for parking.
