Mamallapuram, a renowned tourist hotspot, is bidding farewell to its congested bus terminus. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is set to construct a state-of-the-art bus terminus along the East Coast Road (ECR), aimed at decongesting the town.

The CMDA has taken the first steps, floating a tender for construction, with a contractor expected to be finalized by November.

The current bus terminus, amid the town`s hustle and bustle, has posed challenges for both tourists and heritage preservation. CMDA Minister P.K. Sekarbabu visited the site and pledged a modern, pleasant travel experience for all passengers.

The new bus terminus project will span 6.79 acres, with a ₹67 crore budget. It will feature a two-story structure with a basement for two-wheelers and cars, shops, ticket counters, and waiting rooms on the ground floor, and office rooms, dormitories, crew rest areas, and a control room on the first floor. Architecturally, it will mirror the iconic Shore Temple, with parking space for 350 two-wheelers and 200 cars.

CMDA aims to complete the project within 14 months, providing tourists with a more accessible and enjoyable experience while preserving the town`s heritage.
