The new machine installed by the Adyar residents is making many heads turn now!!

Solid Waste Management or SWM has been taken up seriously by the residents of Adyar in Chennai.
The news that has emerged is that the residents here have installed a 3 lane composter having a capacity of 750- 800kg per month for SWM. It is worthy to note that the wet waste would be composed of the equipment that has the capacity of making 20kg-25kg of compost every day.
For a month, the wet waste would be deposited in the composter and manure would be distributed to the residents. This would be to encourage segregation at homes.
It must be recalled that in 2018 Janani Venkatesh, secretary of Kasturba Nagar Association ROKA began segregating and composting wet waste in her home. As it was not sufficient, she reached out to other residents. Afterwards, she formed ROKA with the residents for the solid waste management. Point is that ROKA has been doing door-to-door campaigning for SWM and other activities for the kids since its inception.
Community based model:
It is noteworthy that the lane composters got inspiration from the community model constructed by the residents of HSR Layout in Bengaluru. On 11th of October, the SWM project was launched in Kasturba Nagar in Adyar by Mr. N. Mahesan, chief engineer for SWM. As a part of `We Segregate` this SWM project in Adyar is funded by the Resilience Cities Network and Circulate Initiative.
Project objective:
It must be noted that the project has an objective of segregating waste up to 90% in Kasturba Nagar and spreading awareness among other communities also.
