If you have gone to the highly congested and busy Ranganathan Street in T. Nagar in Chennai, then you would have come across a small vilayattu vinagayar temple located on the road. Now, the High Court of Madras has ordered demolition of vilayattu vinayagar temple here.

According to the HC it was clear that no one including the places of worship have the rights to occupy public roads. Point is that division bench comprising of Justice S. Vaidyanathan and Justice K. Rajasekar passed the order.

It must be recalled that in 1992 the temple was shifted to another location to facilitate the construction of an over bridge by the Southern railways. Once when the construction of the over bridge was completed, the temple was relocated to the original place under the bridge.

As per the GCC, the land on which the temple was built was classified as sarkari land and usage of the land has been classified as road. Mr. PT. Ramkumar, advocate for railways submitted that the exchange of land for over-bridge construction was only between GCC and SR and the temple must not take any advantage. The bench made it clear that since the temple did not have a valid title it was a case of encroachment.

It is learnt that the HC has asked the authorities to shift the deities in another 15 days to another place without damaging them.  Point to be noted is that after the identification of a place for the construction of the temple and after completion of the construction the deities could be shifted to newly built temple.
