It has been 2 years since the work on storm water drain or SWD started near the MIT flyover in Chromepet in south Chennai. Even now, the work has not been completed. This is disrupting the lives of many here.
Point is that a couple of day`s back a pedestrian slipped and fell down near the SWD along a narrow lane congested with many vehicles. After dark, the situation here becomes highly chaotic.
According to a resident here, the residents as well as the pedestrians would have to pass through the drain filled with garbage. During rains, the water overflows and reaches the gates of the houses here. In addition, roaming cattle also poses many issues for the residents as the passage has become narrow now due to piling up of garbage beneath the flyover. Inspite of many protests by residents and activists etc, the work is still not completed. The slow speed of the work has been irritating many residents now.
It was later mentioned by some officers belonging to the Tambaram Corporation that review meetings have been conducted to discuss with several departments regarding the completion of underground drainage and SWD works etc. By 31st October, all the works must be completed and this was instructed by the corporation commissioner to the highways dept.
