The Elephant gate flyover was closed due to excessive damage and in 2018 permission was issued to construct a new flyover there.
Yesterday, MP Mr. Dayanidhi Maran and CMDA minister Mr. Sekar Babu made their presence felt at the Elephant Gate flyover road located in the Royapuram zone under the Chennai Harbour constituency. Mr. Dayanidhi Maran later urged that the pending works must be completed as soon as possible.
Mr. Dayanidhi Maran later spoke about how a letter was written to the Union minister in 2019 as there was no progress in the construction of the flyover at Elephant Gate in Chennai. In that letter, a request was made to meet the GM of Southern Railways and complete the works quickly.
Later on, it was planned to divide the flyover construction works into 3 sections and as a part of that SR and GCC jointly carried out the construction works by sharing the costs. It was assured that the SR would bear the expenses and finish the construction works.
The flyover works were supposed to have been completed by June 2022 but after 7years the works were not completed. There has been delay in the flyover construction and this was accepted by the Southern Railways. Now, the GM of SR has given assurance that one section of the flyover at Elephant Gate would be completed fully by February. This would provide a solution to the traffic problem in these parts.
