With the presence of many manufacturing and ancillary industries in and around Chennai and without any logistics plan, CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority has decided to prepare a City Logistics Plan or CLP for 5904 sq km of CMA.

The ability to move goods has become very important in maintaining the efficiency of the industries in and around Chennai. This was according to a request for proposal or RFP document. It is learnt that rapid ramping of the e-commerce industry has resulted in demand for logistics and warehousing.

It has been brought out that under this initiative CUMTA would prepare a logistics master plan in line with the vision of TN Logistics Policy and Integrated Logistics Plan 2023, Comprehensive Mobility Plan and Third Master Plan Vision.

Mapping of all logistics facilities:

It is now said that CUMTA would map all the logistics facilities in Chennai like container freight stations, ICDs, logistics parks, freight terminals, industrial parks, warehousing etc. To access the goods movement in Chennai city, a commodity based model would be developed.

Estimation of key transportation network augmentation requirements would be carried out by CLP. This would be based on the existing plans of the concerned govt agencies and condition assessment carried out in the first part. For the growth and development of an economy, a robust and cost-effective logistics system would be important. This was as per the document. It added that with more manufacturing and ancillary industries located in and around Chennai the need to have a strategic and viable logistics plan becomes more.

It is a known fact that Chennai is one of the hubs for trade and commerce in India and Chennai has the fourth largest gross metropolitan product in India.
