Since January, Chennai residents have lost up to Rs 189 crore to cyber fraud, according to city police. Victims are advised to report online scams on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) via helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in to freeze the suspect accounts and aid recovery.
Out of 1,679 reported cybercrime cases in Chennai this year, 1,589 were financial scams, including online share trading frauds, digital arrest schemes, fake job offers, and EB bill scams.
Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to streamline recovery processes. An NCRP acknowledgment helps freeze suspicious bank accounts and is crucial for victims seeking to reclaim their money.
Recent guidance from the Madras High Court allows victims to initiate recovery actions based on NCRP complaints and cybercrime police reports, even without an FIR.
