Highly popular MCC or Madras Christian College in Tambaram in Chennai making amazing news now!!

There is a lake inside the 300 acre campus in MCC and smart ducks has been introduced by the management here to track the water quality. It is now said that the IoT enabled remote controlled duck would move across the lake and would collect real time data  on important factors like water temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and pH.

The lake is one of the key water sources inside the MCC campus and it was de-silted by Bisleri International Limited as a part of their CSR project. For developing a prototype for checking water quality, funds have been handed out.

MCC-MRF Innovation park:

The 3D printed duck with sensors has been designed by the team belonging to MCC-MRF Innovation Park. The app has been created for receiving and analysing the data.

According to Mr. Paul Wilson, MCC Principal, decisions regarding lake conservation could be taken based on the data. Ecology as well as wildlife present inside the MCC campus would be conserved by this. He threw light on how any change in the water quality would reveal contamination of water. He concluded that proactive steps would be taken to control the damage.

The founder of the start-up KOLOZEN, Mr. Koushik explained that duck would be powered by means of in-built solar panels. He hinted that the duck could be operated without sunlight for about 2 days and could be changed manually. Information is that this start-up built the duck.

It is now mentioned by some researchers that ducks would also be deployed outside the campus to know about the water quality and to collect data for local bodies.

IIT-M chemistry dept professor Mr. T. Pradeep spoke about how by the help of data it would be possible to know what was happening to the water body during the rains, seasonal change, diseases etc.

Hydro informatics platform:

Point to be noted is that with the help of the data hydro informatics platform would be built and it has got a huge potential. Not many would know that the scrub inside MCC campus has spotted deers, porcupines, toddy cats, bats etc. With the help of 2 cameras present in the eyes of the duck, any movement of wild animals could be traced easily.
