Monsoon rains returned to Chennai with a downpour on Thursday, bringing significant rainfall across several areas. According to data from the Integrated Command and Control Centre of the Greater Chennai Corporation, Manali New Town and Madhavaram recorded the highest rainfall, with 120.6 mm and 104 mm, respectively, from 6 am to 6 pm.
Other notable rainfall measurements from different zones include:
- Tiruvottiyur (Zone 1): 69.6 mm
- Manali (Zone 2): 79.5 mm
- Kolathur (Zone 6): 81.3 mm
- Anna Nagar West (Zone 8): 66.3 mm
- Ayapakkam and Ambattur (Ambattur zone): 59.8 mm and 50.7 mm, respectively
In areas like Valasaravakkam, Maduravoyal, Vadapalani, and Nungambakkam, rainfall ranged from 20 mm to 40 mm. Meanwhile, southern zones such as Adyar, Perungudi, and Sholinganallur saw lighter showers, with rainfall remaining under 15 mm. The average rainfall across the Greater Chennai Corporation region was recorded at 37.5 mm.
The heavy rainfall is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the central parts of the south Bay of Bengal in the lower tropospheric levels. Weather forecasts indicate that both northern and southern Tamil Nadu may experience moderate rainfall over the coming days.
