Every year, during the monsoon season, many localities in Chennai get inundated and creates issues for the residents.
Now the GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation is concentrating on renovating the old ponds and creating new ponds in Chennai. By this, the storage capacity of the ponds would be increased.
As a result, the excess water would not lead to inundation in the residential localities. In the last 56 months, as many as 41 ponds have been restored by GCC. In Valasarawakkam, SVS pond has been restored and in KK. Nagar WAWF board pond has been restored.
It is noteworthy that in 2023 monsoon SVS Nagar in Valasarawakkam was flooded. In that scenario, the CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited desilted the choked drain at Arcot Road from SVS Nagar Main Road to Kamarajar Salai for free flow of water.
Information is that the 4 acre pond that was under the private entity was taken over by the Chennai Corporation and restoration started.
Widening and deepening works to an area of 2.5 acres were carried out on the pond before the monsoon season. Point is that the water storage capacity was increased from 27000 cubic metres to 47000 cubic metres. It is superb to more that this work prevented the locality from inundation.
Mr. Sivakrishnamurthy, deputy commissioner ( Works) GCC spoke about how the storage capacity of the pond would further be increased to 60000 cubic metres once when works get completed. It is now said that the pond would be beautified and converted into an eco park at the cost of Rs 4.88 cr.
According to Mr. Rajendiran, chief engineeer, GCC, 2 stake holders meeting was conducted with the resident welfare associations and then only the proposal was submitted.
