38 MBBS students studying at the Deena Dayal Naidu Medical College in Thiruvallur have begun a hunger strike on the MGR Medical University campus at Guindy here demanding they be allowed to write exams. The issue started when the Medical Council of India (MCI) withdrew its recognition to the college last year following which the university cancelled the affiliation. When the affiliation was cancelled, students who completed the first year were not allowed to appear for exams while the second year students were not allowed to write their arrears.

The students, 22 of them girl students, have been staging a sit-in protest on the university campus since August 21. The police have evicted them 10 times since the protest began. However, the students reassembled after a few days and continued their protests, and they launched the hunger strike on Monday.
