Chennai’s much-anticipated 133-km Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR), linking Ennore Port to Poonjeri near Mamallapuram, is progressing steadily, with major sections expected to be completed by the end of 2025, according to the Highways Department.
Construction Progress
- Tiruvallur Bypass to Sriperumbudur (30.8 km):
- L&T (Contractor) – 79% work completed
- SPK Ltd – 50% work completed
- Sriperumbudur to Singaperumalkoil (Section 4): Completed
- Singaperumalkoil to Mamallapuram (27.41 km, Section 5):
- Land acquisition in the final stage
- Upgraded to a six-lane road instead of four
- Tenders to be floated soon
- Ennore Port to Thatchur (Section 1):
- Faces delays due to land acquisition for 12 tanks and power lines
Key Features
- First access-controlled highway by the Highways Department
- Service lanes for local traffic planned along the entire stretch
- Connects NH5 (Chennai–Tada), NH4 (Chennai–Bengaluru), NH45 (Chennai–Tiruchi), and East Coast Road (ECR)
Once completed, the CPRR will decongest city roads, enhance connectivity, and boost economic activity in Chennai and surrounding regions.
