Just a couple of months back in December, there was a minor train derailment near Tondiarpet in north Chennai. The reason for this derailment was due to sand and water seeping into the tunnel. It must be taken into note that CMRL has been addressing the similar leakage issues in the phase-1 network and its extension.

It must be recalled that a committee was formed to investigate the incident that took place in December. Point to be noted is that this committee recommended immediate action to be taken to fix the leaks and seepage in the tunnels. In this scenario, CMRL has floated tenders for contractors to carry out the work.

According to some officials belonging to CMRL, the leakage points in the tunnels would be plugged with the help of polyurethane injection resin grout material. For safety purposes, preventive tunnel maintenance was essential. The important piece of information is that a leak occurred near Sir Theagaraya College metro a few months before the incident happened at Tondiarpet.

As many as nineteen metro stations are underground out of a total of thirty two metro stations in the 45km phase-one network. For a distance of 9km across 9 metro stations, phase one extension network runs and just 2 stations are underground.
