How many are aware of the fact that the Southern Railways or SR has been silently transforming the outlook of St Thomas Mount or Parangimalai railway station?
It is said that this railway station would become the multimodal transportation hub in Chennai. Sensational!!
At present, the entire attention has been on the Central Square project in Chennai but the work of transforming St Thomas Mount railway station has been going silently.
In less that few months, the Parangimalai railway station would sport a new look with superb upgraded facilities. It is known that at this Parangimalai railway station Beach- Velachery MRTS as well as Chennai metro rail and Beach-Tambaram/Chengalpattu suburban corridors converge.
The upgraded facilities at St Thomas Mount railway station would include the improvement of the state façade on the eastern and western sides and entry arches on the bus stop side of the station. The facelift works have been undertaken at a cost of Rs 14.15 cr. In the future, the passengers at this station would also come across new ticket booking windows plus a new pedestrian plaza with signages to optimize accessibility. Apart from these, the platforms at this railway station would also be given facelift and floors would be resurfaced. There would be additional shelters also here.
Passengers would be surprised to witness a changeover in the parking facility at this railway station in the future. Point is that the existing parking areas would be renovated and floors would be strengthened at the main entry side and CMRL side. For enhancing the safety of the passengers, better surveillance through CCTV would be done here. There would also be superb upgrading of the passenger announcement system as well as the information display boards etc.
The renovation works would get over by March 2025 as the Railways officials have set that as the deadline. It was later explained by an official belonging to SR that the renovation at St Thomas Mount railway station was essential as it would be important in the Chennai rail transport network.
He spoke about how after the completion of multimodal integration and railway station development works the SR would not consider stoppage of express trains at St Thomas Mount station. He concluded that the railway station might go for additional infra-development atleast in the ticket booking, passenger waiting area and feeder service etc after the express train`s stoppage gets implemented.
