The Chennai Corporation has initiated microchipping stray dogs and proposed the construction of Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres across the city at an estimated cost of ₹7.08 crore.
Currently, five ABC centres operate in Pulianthope, Kannammapet, Lloyd`s Colony, Meenambakkam, and Sholinganallur. A 2023 survey identified 1.8 lakh stray dogs, prompting the proposal for four new ABC centres:
- Tiruvottiyur & Royapuram zones – ₹1.82 crore each
- Tondiarpet zone (Madhavaram Bio CNG plant) – ₹1.82 crore
- Perungudi zone – ₹1.60 crore
Additionally, the civic body has identified locations for cattle sheds to manage stray cattle. Two new shelters will be built at Tambaram-Velachery Main Road (₹2.56 crore) and Bakthivendha Road, Sholinganallur (₹7.85 crore). Construction is set to begin soon.
