Chennai Mayor Inaugurates Cloth Bag Vending Machine

Chennai Mayor R. Priya inaugurated a cloth bag vending machine under the Meendum Manjappai Scheme on MMDA Colony Main Road. This initiative aims to curb single-use plastics in Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) areas.
In the second phase, 17 more machines were installed, adding to the 25 set up earlier. Cloth bags are now available in market areas for public and traders, with ongoing awareness campaigns.
GCC has distributed 50,000 cloth bags in six months and collected ₹1.10 crore in fines for plastic bag usage. Regarding Tamil nameboards, the Mayor stated that steps are being taken for implementation.
