Majority of the roads across the Chennai city including the main stretches like Poonamallee High Road Nungambakkam and Kodampakam, could be re-laid with concrete in about 2 years, says the senior officials of the Chennai Corporation.
On Tuesday, a meeting will be organized with the Chennai Mayor and a team of senior engineers, so as to discuss about the possibility of the project, which includes reinstating black-topped roads with concrete on a total of 441km and is likely to cost around 1,600 Crores.
Even though the concrete road will cost around three times more than the black-topped road, but is last for many years. And concrete roads need little maintenance, said a corporation official.
As this project is proposed for larger scale, the carriageways ought to be altered prior to this road innovation work, said the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy department. Since the concrete work is permanent, the Corporation should take whole responsibility in providing adequate space for pedestrians and cyclists.
Few concrete roads have by now seems to be dangerous, as the manholes on the roads are very entrenched and blemished with ridges.
The planes of the roads were left naked, thus agencies like TNEB, and mobile phone service suppliers would find it tranquil to shift links. Ultimately, the corporation strives to seal the manholes momentarily. The corporation might face the same issue when it adopts the work on main roads.
