Do rag pickers have any recognition in the city?

The city corporation derived plans to include rag pickers in garbage cleaning system and issue identity cards just the way cities like Pune and Bangalore does. This system however seems to have halted now.
According to corporation officials, issuing identity cards to rag pickers is not a viable choice. They say it is not easy to perform background check of all rag pickers, as they may misuse the facility. The overall control of all these procedures is with the revenue department. The department has however not come forward for any sort of discussions on the topic yet.
Speaking to an environmentalist, Dharmesh Shah, he says rag picking is one of the major works done in the environment. Rag pickers are a huge contributor to our city and something should be done in turn to them for their service. The corporation officials say issuing ID card is not viable, but cities like Pune have made it possible in a positive way. If that is the case with those cities, why not in Chennai, he questions.
